Tom Hanks turned 67 today. And whether you like his movies or not, you have to admit that the man doesn’t let moss grow under his feet. He has made over 100 movies. But what’s more remarkable is how he got started.
Everyone probably knows that he starred in the sitcom Bosom Buddies for two seasons on ABC from November 27, 1980 to March 27, 1982. But did you know that his first movie (1980) was a slasher film called He Knows You’re Alone? Of course, Tom wasn’t the serial killer. In fact, he played a relatively small part (a victim of the slasher). But the filmmakers liked him so much that they omitted filming his death scene for the film. Can you imagine telling your friends, “Yeah, I’m gonna’ be in this slasher movie, but they didn’t have the heart to show me getting killed, so I don’t know if that’s good or bad.”
Turns out that was very good for Hanks. Four years later, Splash came out, the movie about the mermaid, and Hanks hasn’t looked back since. Every director has him on speed dial, and Hanks has never turned down a job. Wait. What? He turned down the starring roles in Jerry Maguire, Speed, The Shawshank Redemption, When Harry Met Sally, Hook, Batman Forever, and Field of Dreams (among others)? Can you imagine how many Oscars the two-time Oscar winner would have by now if he weren’t so picky?
So, now it’s time to tell you what my favorite Tom Hanks film is. Drumroll, please. And the winner is Catch Me If You Can. What’s yours? Leave a comment and let me know.
