6/24/24
Yesterday was our 21st wedding anniversary. To celebrate, we went to one of our favorite restaurants (Francesco's Ristorante & Pizzeria in Maitland, FL), listened to one of our favorite comedians (John Mulaney) on the drive home, and went straight to bed and cuddled up with the dogs as soon as we walked through the door. Very low key. In fact, I don’t think we’ve ever made a big deal of any of our anniversaries. Maybe we’ll do something big for our 25th.
That’ll be our silver anniversary, which will be a significant milestone, right? Each year is represented by a different item, which isn’t always the gift you’re supposed to give. For example, according to Bride.com, the first 10 anniversaries are: paper, cotton, leather, fruit or flowers, wood, candy or iron, copper or wood, bronze, pottery, and tin or aluminum. Who named those things?
I mean, I could create my own list and you might not even notice the difference: pleather, weeds, cable TV, chocolate, titanium, sanitizer, bramble, rocks, Crisco, and Gummy Bears. Okay, so maybe you’d notice.
Anyway, the origin of wedding anniversaries supposedly dates back to the Romans. Back then, I think you were given the choice of either celebrating your anniversary or being thrown to the lions. Donna and I celebrated ours by engaging in our usual bedtime ritual: ignoring each other and simultaneously staring at our phones. Whatever works, right?
